Tangy Alabama White Sauce Recipe

September 26, 2019 By Jessica 4 Comments

Alabama White Sauce is a creamy BBQ sauce that’s delicious with smoked meats, veggies and potatoes. This versatile recipe is a must-make for any home cook.

Alabama White Sauce

I’m a huge fan when it comes to condiments. Always have been, always will be. There’s no greater pleasure than dunking a French fry (or anything, really) into some smooth, decadent oh-so-satisfying sauce. Am I right?

HOW TO MAKE ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE:

This recipe couldn’t be easier. All you need to do is place all ingredients in a mixing bowl and whisk them together until well combined. That’s it. Place the sauce in a mason jar and it will stay good in your fridge for up to a week. Just make sure to screw the lid on when storing. Truth be told, ours typically lasts a day or two (because we practically drizzle it over everything).

WHERE DID ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE ORIGINATE?

Alabama white sauce was originally created by Big Bob’s Gibson Bar-B-Q in the town of Decatur, Alabama. While you can purchase their famous sauce online, I prefer making my own version at home. Don’t get me wrong, their sauce is delicious. However, when I’m having a white sauce craving I’m pretty impatient. I need it ASAP and don’t have time to wait for shipping.

IDEAS FOR USING ALABAMA WHITE SAUCE:

Contrary to the traditional tomato-based bbq sauce, this version is made with a base of mayonnaise. I realize that mayo preferences are incredibly personal, so go ahead and use whatever brand you enjoy most. I’m a Duke’s girl, in case you’re wondering.

For the true Alabama White Sauce experience, serve this drizzled over smoked chicken. Since I don’t have a smoker at home, I’ll often make a big batch of my Everything But The Bagel Shredded Chicken and we’ll enjoy the sauce over sandwiches all week. My family also likes having it with pizza, chicken wings, and chili. Heck… this would be great in a coleslaw recipe, too. I think I’ll try that next.

It will stay good in your fridge for up to a week. But trust me, it won’t last that long 🙂

This tastes great but seems real “soupy”…

Hey Jennifer! This could depend on the type of mayonnaise you use. I always use Duke’s mayo. This sauce is also not as thick as a Texas style BBQ sauce, but a mix of texture between thicker traditional and Carolina Mustard-Style consistency. If you’d like for this sauce to be thicker, I’d suggest increasing the mayo to 1.25 – 1.5 cups, taste, and adjust seasonings as necessary. Thanks for stopping by!
